Revenge trading
Revenge trading is opening a new trade straight after a loss to win the money back, usually bigger, faster and outside your plan. It shows up in your history as a pattern you can measure: short gaps after losses, larger size and trades your plan would not take.
Free tier: 2 accounts, no card required.
Revenge trading means trading to recover a loss rather than because your setup is there. The signs are a trade opened minutes after a loss, a bigger position than usual and an entry outside your plan. To stop it, set a rule such as a 30-minute break after any loss, tag those trades and compare their results.

Quick answers
What is revenge trading?
Revenge trading is taking a trade to win back money you just lost, driven by frustration rather than your setup. It usually means trading sooner, bigger or with less checking than normal, which tends to turn one loss into several.
How do you stop revenge trading?
Stop revenge trading with a fixed rule you decide before the session: for example, a set break after any loss, a maximum number of losses per day, and the same position size after a loss as before it. Then review every trade taken soon after a loss and see what it cost you.
What is tilt in trading?
Tilt in trading is a state where emotion, usually anger after a loss, takes over your decisions. A trader on tilt breaks rules they normally follow. Revenge trading is the most common form of trading tilt.

The signs
How revenge trades look in your data
You rarely notice revenge trading in the moment. You can see it afterwards, in three numbers.
Time after a loss
The next trade opens within minutes of a losing trade closing, much faster than your usual gap between trades.
Bigger size
The lot size or contracts go up after a loss, to make the money back in one go.
Outside the plan
The trade has no setup from your plan: a different market, a counter-trend entry or no stop loss.
How to stop it
A simple routine to stop revenge trading
- Write the rule before you trade. For example: after any losing trade, no new trade for 30 minutes. After 3 losses in a day, stop for the day.
- Keep size fixed. Risk the same % per trade after a loss as before it. Size only changes at a planned review, never mid-session.
- Tag suspect trades. Give every trade opened soon after a loss, or bigger than normal, a tag such as revenge.
- Review weekly. Compare the P&L, win rate and profit factor of tagged trades against the rest. Seeing the number is what makes the rule stick.
See how to review trades for a full weekly review, and overtrading for the closely related habit of taking too many trades.
Use your real trades
Find your revenge trades in a journal
Dusk Analyst records each trade's open and close time, size and P&L, and lets you add tags and notes. Tag revenge trades and filter by tag to see their win rate and profit factor next to your normal trades. Calculate this from your real trades: import your MT4/MT5 history on the Free plan, or auto-sync MT4, MT5, cTrader or NinjaTrader 8 on Pro.

FAQ
Revenge trading questions, answered.
How do you avoid revenge trading?
Avoid revenge trading by deciding your rules before the session and making them mechanical: a break after each loss, a daily loss limit and fixed size. Walking away from the screen after a loss is the simplest version.
Why is revenge trading so common?
Losses hurt more than equal gains feel good, so after a loss many traders want to get back to even quickly. That urge pushes them to trade sooner and bigger, which is why one bad trade can become a bad day.
How long should I wait after a loss?
There is no single right number. Pick a gap longer than your normal time between trades, such as 15 to 30 minutes, and test it against your own history: check whether trades taken soon after a loss do worse than the rest.
Is revenge trading the same as overtrading?
No, but they overlap. Revenge trading is triggered by a loss. Overtrading is taking too many trades in general, from boredom, fear of missing out or chasing a target. Revenge trading is one cause of overtrading.
Can a trading journal stop revenge trading?
A journal does not stop a trade, but it shows you the cost. When you can see that your revenge-tagged trades lost money, the break-after-a-loss rule becomes much easier to keep.
Is Dusk Analyst really free?
Yes. The free tier costs $0 forever and includes two accounts, manual trade entry and CSV import - enough to journal a live account properly, with win rate, P&L and equity curve all calculated for you. There is no credit card required to start. Pro ($25/month flat) adds unlimited accounts, MT4/MT5/cTrader/NinjaTrader auto-sync, AI insights on your trading (1,000 trade-analyses a month), monthly reports and full export, and every new account gets Pro free for 5 trading days with no card. The pricing is deliberately simple: one plan, one price, no per-feature upsells.
Is there a free trial?
Yes, and it needs no card. Every new Dusk Analyst account gets Pro free for 5 trading days from sign-up: auto-sync from MT4, MT5, cTrader and NinjaTrader 8, AI Insights with 1,000 credits, monthly reports and unlimited accounts. After that Pro is $25/month, and you can cancel anytime from Billing in the app. If you skip it, the account moves to Free with every trade kept.
Can I import my existing trade history?
Yes - CSV import is available on every plan, including free. If you've been tracking trades in a spreadsheet, broker export or another journal, export the CSV from wherever it lives and import it into Dusk Analyst; the journal matches it against your accounts and keeps your history continuous. Import is also the fallback for platforms that don't run MT4, MT5, cTrader or NinjaTrader 8. For MT4/MT5/cTrader/NinjaTrader terminals, Pro auto-syncs going forward and the EA backfills any trades your terminal missed while it was off. Any platform that exports a CSV of your trade history works. Dusk Analyst recognises TradingView, Tradovate, cTrader, MT4 and MT5 exports on sight; for anything else you map your columns once and that parser is saved for next time. Comma, semicolon and tab files are all handled, day-first and month-first dates are detected from the file itself, and any row that cannot be read is listed for you rather than dropped quietly.
How many AI credits do I get with Dusk Analyst Pro?
Pro includes 1,000 AI trade-analyses every month. One credit covers one trade, so asking a question about a 40-trade week costs 40 credits and you can keep asking. The allowance resets on the 1st of each month and the counter sits in the top bar of the app, so you always know where you stand. Narrowing a question to one account or a shorter date range makes the same allowance go much further. Free accounts get a small number of AI credits to try AI Insights, alongside the full journal, analytics and weekly reports, and the free Pro week (5 trading days, no card) includes the full monthly allowance.
