Overtrading

Overtrading is taking more trades, or bigger trades, than your plan allows, so that costs and low-quality setups eat your edge. You can spot it by comparing how many trades you take each day with how that day ended.

Free tier: 2 accounts, no card required.

Overtrading means trading more often or with more size than your plan justifies. Common causes are boredom, chasing a daily target and trying to win back losses. To avoid it, set a maximum number of trades per day, only take setups from your plan and check in your journal whether high-trade days make or lose money.

Quick answers

What is overtrading?

Overtrading is trading more than your strategy calls for: too many trades, too large a size, or trades without a valid setup. Each extra trade adds spread and commission, and the setups behind them are usually weaker.

What causes overtrading?

The main causes of overtrading are boredom, fear of missing out, chasing a daily profit target, trying to recover a loss and having no written rule for when a setup is valid. Fast markets and low-cost platforms make it easy.

How do you avoid overtrading?

Avoid overtrading with a hard daily trade cap and a written list of the setups you take. When you hit the cap, you stop. Review your days by trade count to set the cap at the point where extra trades stopped paying.

The signs

How overtrading shows up

More trades, worse days

Your days with the most trades end with lower P&L than your normal days.

Costs climb

Commission and spread take a bigger share of gross profit as the trade count rises.

No setup tag

More trades have no setup from your plan, or are tagged as impulse or FOMO entries.

How to avoid it

Set a daily trade cap

  1. Count trades per day. Group your past trades by day and note the trade count and the day's P&L.
  2. Find the turn. Look for the trade count above which days stop improving. That is your cap, for example 3 or 5 trades.
  3. Write it in the plan. The cap goes in your trading plan next to your daily loss limit.
  4. Check weekly. Count the days you broke the cap and what they cost.

In day trading, overtrading is common after a loss (see revenge trading), after a big win when confidence runs high, and in quiet sessions out of boredom.

Use your real trades

Check your trade count against your P&L

Dusk Analyst shows your P&L by day, session and setup, with commission and swap on each trade, so you can see whether your busiest days pay. Calculate this from your real trades: import your MT4/MT5 history on the Free plan, or auto-sync MT4, MT5, cTrader or NinjaTrader 8 on Pro.

FAQ

Overtrading questions, answered.

How many trades a day is overtrading?

There is no fixed number. It is overtrading when you take more trades than your plan's setups produce. Your own history tells you where the line is: find the trade count above which your days stop improving.

Is overtrading bad in day trading?

Usually yes. Day traders pay spread and commission on every trade, so extra low-quality trades lower net results even when gross results look flat.

What is the opposite of overtrading?

Undertrading: skipping valid setups from your plan out of fear. Both are rule breaks. A journal shows both, as trades with no setup and setups you noted but did not take.

Does a daily loss limit stop overtrading?

It helps on losing days but not on winning days, when many traders give profit back. Use a daily trade cap as well as a daily loss limit.

Is Dusk Analyst really free?

Yes. The free tier costs $0 forever and includes two accounts, manual trade entry and CSV import - enough to journal a live account properly, with win rate, P&L and equity curve all calculated for you. There is no credit card required to start. Pro ($25/month flat) adds unlimited accounts, MT4/MT5/cTrader/NinjaTrader auto-sync, AI insights on your trading (1,000 trade-analyses a month), monthly reports and full export, and every new account gets Pro free for 5 trading days with no card. The pricing is deliberately simple: one plan, one price, no per-feature upsells.

Is there a free trial?

Yes, and it needs no card. Every new Dusk Analyst account gets Pro free for 5 trading days from sign-up: auto-sync from MT4, MT5, cTrader and NinjaTrader 8, AI Insights with 1,000 credits, monthly reports and unlimited accounts. After that Pro is $25/month, and you can cancel anytime from Billing in the app. If you skip it, the account moves to Free with every trade kept.

Can I import my existing trade history?

Yes - CSV import is available on every plan, including free. If you've been tracking trades in a spreadsheet, broker export or another journal, export the CSV from wherever it lives and import it into Dusk Analyst; the journal matches it against your accounts and keeps your history continuous. Import is also the fallback for platforms that don't run MT4, MT5, cTrader or NinjaTrader 8. For MT4/MT5/cTrader/NinjaTrader terminals, Pro auto-syncs going forward and the EA backfills any trades your terminal missed while it was off. Any platform that exports a CSV of your trade history works. Dusk Analyst recognises TradingView, Tradovate, cTrader, MT4 and MT5 exports on sight; for anything else you map your columns once and that parser is saved for next time. Comma, semicolon and tab files are all handled, day-first and month-first dates are detected from the file itself, and any row that cannot be read is listed for you rather than dropped quietly.

How many AI credits do I get with Dusk Analyst Pro?

Pro includes 1,000 AI trade-analyses every month. One credit covers one trade, so asking a question about a 40-trade week costs 40 credits and you can keep asking. The allowance resets on the 1st of each month and the counter sits in the top bar of the app, so you always know where you stand. Narrowing a question to one account or a shorter date range makes the same allowance go much further. Free accounts get a small number of AI credits to try AI Insights, alongside the full journal, analytics and weekly reports, and the free Pro week (5 trading days, no card) includes the full monthly allowance.
