Futures margin
Futures margin is the deposit you need in your account to hold a futures position, not a fee. The exchange (CME) sets initial and maintenance margin; your broker sets the lower day trading margin. Enter your broker's number below to see how much of your account it uses.
Free tier: 2 accounts, no card required.
Futures margin is a good-faith deposit per contract. CME sets initial margin (to open and hold a position) and maintenance margin (the floor before a margin call). Brokers set day trading margin for positions closed the same session, often far lower: as of November 2026, NinjaTrader lists $500 for standard futures and $50 for micros.

Quick answers
How much margin is required for futures?
It depends on the contract, market volatility and whether you hold overnight. Overnight you need the exchange's initial margin, which CME recalculates at least daily. Intraday, brokers set their own day trading margin; NinjaTrader lists $500 per standard contract and $50 per micro as of November 2026.
What is the difference between initial and maintenance margin?
Initial margin is what you need to open a position. Maintenance margin is the lower level your account must stay above. CME says that if equity falls below maintenance, a call is issued to bring the account back up to initial margin.
What is day trading margin?
Day trading margin is a lower deposit your broker accepts for positions opened and closed in the same session. It is set by the broker, not the exchange, and if you hold past the cut-off you need full initial margin.

How it works
Three kinds of futures margin
- Initial margin. Set by the exchange. The deposit to open a position and hold it overnight. CME recalculates requirements at least once a day and changes them with volatility.
- Maintenance margin. Set by the exchange. The level your account must stay above. Fall below it and you get a margin call to top back up to initial margin.
- Day trading margin. Set by your broker. A lower deposit for trades closed the same session. As of November 2026, NinjaTrader's pricing page lists $500 for standard futures, $50 for micros and $25 for smalls.
Margin numbers change often. Always use your broker's current figure, not one copied from a website.
The calculator
Using the margin calculator
Enter your account balance, the margin per contract from your broker and the number of contracts. You get the margin used, its share of your account, what is left over and the most contracts your balance covers.
Example: a $5,000 account trading 2 contracts at $500 day margin uses $1,000, or 20% of the account, leaves $4,000 and could cover 10 contracts. Covering 10 is not a reason to trade 10: margin says what the broker allows, not what you can afford to lose. Check the dollar risk with the futures tick value table: 10 ES ticks is $125 per contract.

FAQ
Futures margin questions, answered.
Is futures margin a cost?
No. Margin is a deposit held against possible losses, not a fee. It is released when you close the position. Your costs are commission, exchange and clearing fees, and any loss.
Who sets futures margin?
The clearing house, CME Clearing for CME contracts, sets initial and maintenance margin. Brokers can ask for more, and they set their own day trading margins.
Why did my futures margin go up?
CME changes margin with market volatility and announces changes through its advisories. When markets get wilder, margins usually rise, and brokers may raise day trading margins too.
What happens if I hold a day-margin position overnight?
Your broker will need full initial margin. If the account does not have it, the broker may close the position for you near the end of the session. Check your broker's cut-off time.
Is this futures margin calculator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, with no sign-up. Your numbers are not sent anywhere.
Is Dusk Analyst really free?
Yes. The free tier costs $0 forever and includes two accounts, manual trade entry and CSV import - enough to journal a live account properly, with win rate, P&L and equity curve all calculated for you. There is no credit card required to start. Pro ($25/month flat) adds unlimited accounts, MT4/MT5/cTrader/NinjaTrader auto-sync, AI insights on your trading (1,000 trade-analyses a month), monthly reports and full export, and every new account gets Pro free for 5 trading days with no card. The pricing is deliberately simple: one plan, one price, no per-feature upsells.
Is there a free trial?
Yes, and it needs no card. Every new Dusk Analyst account gets Pro free for 5 trading days from sign-up: auto-sync from MT4, MT5, cTrader and NinjaTrader 8, AI Insights with 1,000 credits, monthly reports and unlimited accounts. After that Pro is $25/month, and you can cancel anytime from Billing in the app. If you skip it, the account moves to Free with every trade kept.
Can I import my existing trade history?
Yes - CSV import is available on every plan, including free. If you've been tracking trades in a spreadsheet, broker export or another journal, export the CSV from wherever it lives and import it into Dusk Analyst; the journal matches it against your accounts and keeps your history continuous. Import is also the fallback for platforms that don't run MT4, MT5, cTrader or NinjaTrader 8. For MT4/MT5/cTrader/NinjaTrader terminals, Pro auto-syncs going forward and the EA backfills any trades your terminal missed while it was off. Any platform that exports a CSV of your trade history works. Dusk Analyst recognises TradingView, Tradovate, cTrader, MT4 and MT5 exports on sight; for anything else you map your columns once and that parser is saved for next time. Comma, semicolon and tab files are all handled, day-first and month-first dates are detected from the file itself, and any row that cannot be read is listed for you rather than dropped quietly.
How many AI credits do I get with Dusk Analyst Pro?
Pro includes 1,000 AI trade-analyses every month. One credit covers one trade, so asking a question about a 40-trade week costs 40 credits and you can keep asking. The allowance resets on the 1st of each month and the counter sits in the top bar of the app, so you always know where you stand. Narrowing a question to one account or a shorter date range makes the same allowance go much further. Free accounts get a small number of AI credits to try AI Insights, alongside the full journal, analytics and weekly reports, and the free Pro week (5 trading days, no card) includes the full monthly allowance.
