Profit factor calculator

A profit factor calculator divides your gross profit by your gross loss to show how many dollars you make for every dollar you lose. Enter the total of your winning trades and the total of your losing trades.

Free tier: 2 accounts, no card required.

Free, no sign-upSame formula as MT4/MT5 reportsInstant result

Profit factor is gross profit divided by gross loss. $5,400 of winning trades against $3,600 of losing trades is a profit factor of 1.5: you make $1.50 for every $1 you lose. Below 1.0 the strategy loses money, 1.0 is breakeven, and a small margin above 1.0 can disappear in costs.

Quick answers

What is the profit factor formula?

Profit factor = gross profit ÷ gross loss, where gross profit is the sum of all winning trades and gross loss is the sum of all losing trades as a positive number. $5,400 ÷ $3,600 = 1.5.

What is a good profit factor in trading?

A good profit factor is one that stays above 1.0 after commission, swap and spread over a large sample. This calculator reads under 1.0 as losing, 1.0 to 1.25 as a thin edge, 1.25 to 1.75 as workable and 1.75 to 3 as strong. These bands are our rule of thumb, not an industry standard.

Where is the profit factor in MT4 and MT5?

MT4 and MT5 show Profit Factor in the strategy tester report and the account history report. MetaQuotes defines it as the ratio of gross profit to gross loss, the same formula this calculator uses.

How it works

How profit factor is calculated

  1. Gross profit. Add up every winning trade. Example: $5,400.
  2. Gross loss. Add up every losing trade, as a positive number. Example: $3,600.
  3. Divide. $5,400 ÷ $3,600 = 1.5. Net profit is the difference, $1,800.

Use figures after commission and swap. A profit factor worked out before costs looks better than the account it came from.

What a good profit factor looks like

For a trading system

A backtest with a very high profit factor on few trades usually means the sample is too small or the rules are fitted to the past. The calculator flags anything above 3 as worth checking.

In forex

Spread, commission and swap come out of every trade, so a forex strategy near 1.1 can turn negative after costs. Check which costs your report includes.

With win rate

Profit factor combines win rate and payoff in one number. A 40% win rate with winners 2.5 times the size of losers has a profit factor of (0.4 × 2.5) ÷ 0.6 = 1.67.

Use your real numbers

Get your profit factor from your own trades

A strategy tester shows one backtest. Your live account is what counts. Dusk Analyst works it out from your closed trades. Calculate this from your real trades: import your MT4/MT5 history on the Free plan, or auto-sync MT4, MT5, cTrader or NinjaTrader 8 on Pro.

FAQ

Profit factor questions, answered.

What is a good profit factor for forex?

Above 1.0 after spread, commission and swap, over enough trades to trust it. Many traders look for 1.5 or more, but that is a rule of thumb, not a standard.

Can profit factor be too high?

A very high profit factor on a short sample often comes from a few big winners or an over-fitted backtest. Check how many trades it is based on before you trust it.

What is the difference between profit factor and expectancy?

Profit factor is a ratio, gross profit ÷ gross loss. Expectancy is money per trade, net profit ÷ number of trades. A strategy can have a good profit factor and still earn too little per trade to cover costs.

What if I have no losing trades?

Profit factor cannot be calculated when gross loss is zero, so the calculator shows no losses. It also means your sample is too small to judge.

Is this profit factor calculator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up.

Is Dusk Analyst really free?

Yes. The free tier costs $0 forever and includes two accounts, manual trade entry and CSV import - enough to journal a live account properly, with win rate, P&L and equity curve all calculated for you. There is no credit card required to start. Pro ($25/month flat) adds unlimited accounts, MT4/MT5/cTrader/NinjaTrader auto-sync, AI insights on your trading (1,000 trade-analyses a month), monthly reports and full export, and every new account gets Pro free for 5 trading days with no card. The pricing is deliberately simple: one plan, one price, no per-feature upsells.

Is there a free trial?

Yes, and it needs no card. Every new Dusk Analyst account gets Pro free for 5 trading days from sign-up: auto-sync from MT4, MT5, cTrader and NinjaTrader 8, AI Insights with 1,000 credits, monthly reports and unlimited accounts. After that Pro is $25/month, and you can cancel anytime from Billing in the app. If you skip it, the account moves to Free with every trade kept.

Can I import my existing trade history?

Yes - CSV import is available on every plan, including free. If you've been tracking trades in a spreadsheet, broker export or another journal, export the CSV from wherever it lives and import it into Dusk Analyst; the journal matches it against your accounts and keeps your history continuous. Import is also the fallback for platforms that don't run MT4, MT5, cTrader or NinjaTrader 8. For MT4/MT5/cTrader/NinjaTrader terminals, Pro auto-syncs going forward and the EA backfills any trades your terminal missed while it was off. Any platform that exports a CSV of your trade history works. Dusk Analyst recognises TradingView, Tradovate, cTrader, MT4 and MT5 exports on sight; for anything else you map your columns once and that parser is saved for next time. Comma, semicolon and tab files are all handled, day-first and month-first dates are detected from the file itself, and any row that cannot be read is listed for you rather than dropped quietly.

How many AI credits do I get with Dusk Analyst Pro?

Pro includes 1,000 AI trade-analyses every month. One credit covers one trade, so asking a question about a 40-trade week costs 40 credits and you can keep asking. The allowance resets on the 1st of each month and the counter sits in the top bar of the app, so you always know where you stand. Narrowing a question to one account or a shorter date range makes the same allowance go much further. Free accounts get a small number of AI credits to try AI Insights, alongside the full journal, analytics and weekly reports, and the free Pro week (5 trading days, no card) includes the full monthly allowance.
